Huawei Nova 4 didn't beat Samsung to the punch (pun intended) -- the Korean giant launched its own "hole punch" phone, the Galaxy A8s, a week ago -- but it's still an interesting device, and not only because of its screen.
SEE ALSO: The era of the 'hole punch' smartphone has begunThe screen, however, is what will make the Nova 4 noticeable, so let's start with that. Specs-wise, it's the same screen as the one in the Galaxy A8s -- a 6.4-inch, 2,310x1,080 LCD screen with a modest chin and a "hole punch" cutout in its upper left corner to accommodate the selfie camera. It's an obvious new trend that we'll likely see a lot more of next year -- Samsung's next flagship phone, the Galaxy S10, is rumored to have a similar screen as well.
On the specs front, the Nova 4 is a mid-ranger (again, just like the A8s), but in Huawei's world that actually means pretty great specs. It's powered by Huawei's Kirin 970 processor, comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, a fingerprint sensor on the back and a 3,750mAh battery.
The phone's triple rear camera is pretty impressive: It's a 48-megapixel, f/1.8 main shooter with an additional wide-angle, 16-megapixel, f/2.2 sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The 48-megapixel main sensor is Sony's new IMX586 CMOS sensor which can take some enormous photos in well-lit conditions or combine the information from four adjacent pixels to create a very bright 12-megapixel image in low light conditions.
Note that this camera's only included on the phone's more expensive variant; the (unnamed) cheaper variant only has a 20-megapixel main sensor.
The selfie camera is a 25-megapixel, f/2.0 sensor on both variants.
The 48-megapixel version of the Nova 4 will cost 3,399 yuan ($493) in China, while the 20-megapixel variant will be slightly cheaper at 3,099 yuan ($449).
