Stephen Dillane, who played Stannis Baratheon from Season 2 through Season 5 of the HBO hit, recently revealed to the UK's Timesnewspaper (via io9) that he had a hard time understanding what his scenes were about, often relying on his co-star Liam Cunningham (aka Davos Seaworth) to explain what was going on.

"I was entirely dependent on Liam to tell me what the scenes were about -- I didn't know what I was doing until we'd finished filming and it was too late. The damage had been done," he added.
His lack of confidence with the material apparently left Dillane feeling quite insecure about his role, he admitted: "I thought no one would believe in me and I was rather disheartened by the end. I felt I'd built the castle on non-existent foundations."
