As one of the oddest sex scenes in Game of Throneshistory (and that's saying something),erotice for coiuples Daenerys and Jon's coupling in the Season 7 finale left us with a lot of questions.
Like... is incest hot now? Also: Help.
SEE ALSO: 'Game of Thrones' star weighs in on Dany and Jon's union: 'It's going to blow up in their faces'In a post-Emmy nomination interview, Game of Thronesdirectors Alan Taylor and Jeremy Podeswa talked to The Hollywood Reporter about some of last season's most significant moments. Inevitably, the bizarre lovemaking between nephew Jon Snow and auntie Daenerys Targaryen came up.
"For us, it was very important that there be a question about what could possibly happen after this moment," Podeswa told THR.
If you'll remember, the scene where they're getting nasty is intercut with the scene where Sam realizes the two lovebirds are related. "It's an epic revelation about the past, and that's suggestive of the future," said Podeswa, putting things mildly.
He also went on to explain that:
In the script, it described the fact that they were lovemaking, but it didn't go into great detail in terms of what was going on between them in that moment. We built in a moment between Kit [Harington] and Emilia [Clarke] where they stopped and looked into each other's eyes. The intention from my point of view, and their point of view, too, is that they're driven by passion into this. They don't even fully understand what it's all about and what the consequences of it are.
As the audience, we can't know for sure yet what it means either. But if we've been paying attention to this show filled with death, doom, and tragedy, we can assume it won't be a happy wedding. All the theories point to an ill-fated end to this off-putting coupling as well.
Alan Taylor, who directed the episode "Beyond the Wall," spoke to how he handled killing off one of Daenerys' reptilian children.
"I have a history of killing beloved characters on HBO shows: I killed Ned Stark, I killed Julius Caesar [on Rome], I killed Wild Bill Hickok [on Deadwood]," he said. "I knew that killing a dragon was going to be like killing a puppy. It's an emotional moment when you kill a character that's flesh and blood and human, but killing a creature that's beloved the way dragons are? I knew it would have impact."
It certainly did.
Over here at Mashable, we threatened to burn anyone alive who hurt the reptile puppies, and then were forced to follow up with a grieving guide when the show went ahead did it anyway.
So I guess the lessons to be gained here are: 1) Don't expect a happy ending for Jonerys, and 2) Expect more gut-wrenching deaths in whatever episodes Alan Taylor directs in Season 8.
