The erotice monkyfirst trailer for Fallen, a movie adaptation of Lauren Kate's popular YA book series, finally landed online this week, immediately drawing comparisons to The Twilight Saga. Whether it can repeat the success of that franchise is another question, seeing as its release date still remains up in the air.
It wasn't immediately clear which company posted the trailer, which circulated among Fallenfans (aka Fallenatics) after a low-quality copy was uploaded to YouTube.
Relativity is currently listed as Fallen's U.S. distributor on the film's IMDb page, and the company's CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh, encouraged his 155,000 Twitter followers to spread the word and help the trailer go viral on social media earlier this week. However, a spokeswoman for the studio told Mashableon Thursday night that she could not immediately confirm whether Fallenwas, in fact, an official Relativity release at this point.
Since circulating the trailer, Kavanaugh deleted several tweets that seemed to suggest he would decide the film's fate based on fan response to the trailer, though he did implore his followers to watch the high-definition copy outside of YouTube. Kavanaugh also indicated it was "not yet in his power" to confirm any news regarding the Fallenmovie.
With the Twilight, Hunger Gamesand Divergentfranchises dormant for the moment, Hollywood has been looking for other movies to cater to the YA audience, but all other attempts have come up short. Remember The Mortal Instruments, The Host, Beautiful Creaturesand most recently, The 5th Wave? Of course you don't, and if you do, we apologize.
Lionsgate and Summit bet all their chips on those three franchises, while Fallendoesn't have the burden of the fate of a studio riding on its modestly-budgeted shoulders. That said, there's enough fans of the series to make Fallenan attractive release for a distributor that could certainly use a hit as it emerges from bankruptcy.
As Fallenatics surely know, the movie stars Addison Timlin as Lucinda "Luce" Price, who is sent to a reform school called Sword & Cross, where she finds herself caught in a love triangle with Daniel Grigori (Jeremy Irvine) and Cam Briel (Harrison Gilbertson). Scott Hicks (Shine) directed the angels-and-demons movie, which could be ready for theaters in the next six months -- if Relativity decides to move forward with a proper release.
For now, that all depends on you though...
